this is goodbye cat friends. i've decided to close this blog. i don't make it to the spca often enough to get good blog content. i've been mostly just posting on facebook - that seems to be a better medium for it. and since it's a local deal, and my fb friends are mostly local, it makes a little more sense.

but i was thinking...you know what does make good blog content that i've got plenty of? wieners! so if you can stand hanging out with a few dopey dogs, head on over to weenoids. it's brand spanking new over there, so give me a week or so to get my design and sidebar content up. but i couldn't resist today's post, it was just too timely...

Another Year, Another Frosty Paws in the Park

It wasn't quite as cold as last year, but it was still pretty freaking cold at this year's Paws in the Park. I haven't heard what the total was, but Team Ween raised $150 for Central Florida's homeless pets! And what makes me even more proud is that all three made it around the lake on their own!! Then they crashed for the rest of that day.

It's that time again! Actually, for shelters and rescues, it's always that time. But specifically for the SPCA of Central Florida, this time is the biggie - it's Paws in the Park, and Team Ween is out to make a difference!

Riley, Dash and Winnie are ready to walk with hundreds of other dogs to raise a lot of money for the homeless dogs and even the cats of Orlando. This will give an extra chance at life to cats like Whisper, Sophie and Littles. Here's where I let the kitties bat their eyelashes and ask you for money.

So, where have I been, you wonder. Well, I showed you a sneak peak of our newest. And that's exactly where I've been. Oh, and Facebook too (grumble grumble).

Oh the torture I must endure...

This is Winnie, our scared little dachshund girl from the same rescue as Dash, but with a very different story. Winnie is from a championship pedigree, but an "accidental breeding," which led to her being locked in a cage for the first year and a half of her life. So she's completely unsocialized. And unlike Dash, who'd been rehabilitated with the rescue for more than a year, Winnie was only there for about a month, so we're starting from the beginning.

She runs and hides and tinkles when she's nervous. She's tense and hesitant. But she's slowly coming around. Her spunky little personality is shining through. She romps with the dogs when no humans are in the room. She gives lots of sweet kisses. She likes to cuddle. And she LIKES bike rides!!

Don't you dare sing the wicked witch song!

Slow and steady wins the race, right? As for the SPCA kitties, I don't get there as often right now, but when I do, it's a whole new crew. Last Monday, they were going out as fast as they were coming in! I'll have an update on them and their room renovations soon, as well as the 2011 Paws in the Park. Till then!

Happy June!! And why is it happy, you ask? June is Adopt-a-Shelter-Cat month! To celebrate, Orange County Animals Services, which is right across the street from my SPCA, is having a BOGO event! YES, TWO for ONE!! And while you're there, you can check out their new cat adoption area.

Speaking of, June is also the SPCA's Meow March, and you all are invited! This is a Virtual Cat Walk to raise money for renovations to our cat adoption area. All you have to do is sign up and spread the word! There are several ways to join the Meow March. I have a personal fundraising page for donations, or you can join us through our Facebook Cause and help spread the word (you can also donate there). Let's get our March on this June and get my shelter kitties a sweet new pad!

And that's not all! June is also Leon's gotcha month!! Last June was pretty bad for me - my apartment was burglarized, and some very sentimental things were stolen. But if that hadn't happened, I wouldn't have been moving out early, and I wouldn't have been sitting on my porch waiting for the movers, and I wouldn't have seen him wandering the parking lot. The whole story is here if you're interested. In short, Leon is my destiny kitty.

Leon stayed with my parents most of the past year because of my temporary living situation and then the game of musical cats we played. He was a pretty sick puppy too and needed a safe place to heal. The vet said he would have died if I hadn't found him. And he needed a little socializing, especially with dogs. But he's finally back with me, completely healthy and at least twice the weight he was when I found him, *ahem* mom... So we're on a low carb diet and running up and down the stairs often. He and the dogs are still a little wary of one another, but it's going well. I woke up this morning to someone cuddling my leg, and guess who it was. He is so gorgeous and sweet. To think someone could neglect him like that. Give your kitties an extra kiss this June 24, and happy gotcha day Leon!!

One Sick Doggie

I forgot my camera (and everything else) today, so no real updates. Judah and Sugar are gone, hopefully adopted (I hate not really knowing). One-eyed Tony's back from isolation. We hung out. Lots of kittens, some playful, some petrified. I mean, shaking in their boots scared. It was adorable and sad. We loved on them, and they were receptive. They'll be fine.

In other news, I've been cleaning up dog puke all week. Riley was very sick and very cold the other night. While we all stayed warm with the heated blanket, I had to get a shot of Dash cuddling him. Usually Riley likes his space, but I think he appreciated the brotherly love. Or else he was just too sick to care.

Last weekend, the boys and I went to the Doglympics where dock dogs and frisbee dogs competed in real, national competitions. And just for fun, they held ankle biter races, and what's more fun than a weener dog race?!

I knew Dash would be a disaster, but Riley raced last year, so I thought he'd be an old pro. Boy was I wrong. Here's a video of their "senior division" race. The first minute or so is us walking around the fence, so you can skip ahead.

Even this guy thought they were a couple of doofuses!

(Frosty) Paws in the Park

Does this look like sunny Orlando, Florida to you?

Me neither.

Paws in the Park was pawsitively freezing! And, unfortunately, because of this I wasn't able to get any good pictures at all. I carried both boys at one time or another, but we did make it around the lake. Twice! We ended up parking on the far side from the start, so by the time we left, we'd made two full laps. That's more than a mile and a half for these stubby little guys! They did so well. And boy did they sleep hard that night. As of today, they've raised $260 for the SPCA, and I know of one more sponsor who has not yet donated. Though it was cold, the event was an overwhelming success. The total raised by Saturday morning was already $20,000 over their goal of $140,000. YIPPEE!!

I'm sad to say Riley and I did not win the kissing contest. This little girl did.

If you have to lose, might as well make it to someone ADORABLE.

This Saturday, local pets and owners will come together in downtown Orlando to raise money for homeless dogs and cats like me. Without the help of our community, we wouldn't be able to find the new, loving furever homes we deserve.

Check back next week for details and pictures of the event. I hear there are going to be some pretty interesting activities, including a kissing contest! I know of one ween who's sure to lick the competition.

For adoption: The Most Pitiful Cat in the Universe.

His leg looks worse to me, but it also looks like it's been lanced, so I know it's probably getting better. But now the poor guy's got the poos from his meds, and with the cone of shame, he can't properly clean himself. He is misery purr-sonified, and he REEKS. We took him out several times to clean his cage and his bum, and to scratch his ears and neck. He doesn't appreciate the wet rag on his butt, but the scratches, OMGsogoodrightthere!!! And at least he's resting (somewhat) comfortably.

I've been home for five hours and just noticed that I have Judah poo on my jeans.

A Little Solicitation

Today was a good day at the shelter. There were only about 25 cages with cats, so everyone got out while I was there, and I got to spend a good amount of time in the free roam rooms. There was a great little guy named Butters who loved the camera! Unfortunately, he was blowing snot bubbles, and as cute as that was, he got taken to isolation for treatment. But he'll be back and will win someone over for sure.

Judah has an ugly sore on his leg, so he's got an appointment with the vet to have that taken care of. He's looking sick to me too, so it's a good thing someone will be seeing him. Before I left, I went back in to visit him for a bit. He's always hiding in a condo or igloo, so I wanted to get him out and really feel the love. He sat in my lap and purred and did not move. I hated to have to go. He's so handsome with his heart shaped nose.

And guess what?! Cowboy was getting adopted to a great couple as I was leaving! I love people who give the older cats a chance, because they're awesome.

Before this weekend, I hadn't been to the shelter in more than a month, and boy was I having withdrawals. Sure I have enough animal drama at home, but there's just something about my shelter babies. And now I'm helping out with their online listings, so I was excited to get started. This crew knows how to take a photo! So many good looking, camera-loving cats.

Pumpkin is perfection - social, loving, a total character.

Cowboy is another catch, and he has that pucker face I adore!

Cleo and Tinker, the wide-eyed beauties, know how to show off their names while giving a good pose.

Good-ish News

Still haven't found a place for Sasha, but the good news is she seems to be coming around. She ventures out from under the couch and the growling is minimal. She and whoever will have a stand-off if one is in the bathroom and the other wants in. But no blood is being shed. And best of all, no more peeing, as far as I can tell. I still want to find her a home, because I know she'll be much happier as a single cat, and it's best for everyone, but there's no hurry now. No stress. If they can occupy the same space peacefully, I'll take it. And who knows, maybe they'll all become friends.

Sweet Grey Female Cat 2-3 yrs Needs Good Home with NO Other Cats

Sasha is a spayed female ~2-3 years old. Long story short, her original owner (my aunt) is indisposed for a while, so my parents took in her cat, dog and son. But miss Sasha, sweet as she is on her own, does not particularly get along with other cats (my parents have 5, I have 2). We've both tried, and it's just not working. My next stop is the SPCA, where I hope she will be adopted.

A Quick PSA on Pets' Dental Health and Puppy Mills

I don't mean to have so many of my own guys in here, but I'm very upset this morning. Dash went in to get his bottom tusk pulled because it's loose and infected. But it turns out that he has to get all three removed. My poor baby is going to be toothless because someone wanted to mate him, but not take care of him. They stuffed him in a cage for 5 years while they profited off his puppies. They let him get infested with fleas and ticks, let his teeth rot out, let him go mad running in circles and never knowing the loving touch of a human. I am so angry that I wish I could do the same to them. DO NOT support puppy mills. And brush your pets' teeth regularly. They can't do it for themselves. And give your babies extra kisses today. They deserve it.

I hope everyone in the US had a great holiday weekend (and everyone else had a great plain ol' weekend)! I went to NYC and watched the Macy's Parade! That was pretty cool. It was my first time in NY, and I was surprisingly not overwhelmed by the sheer magnitude of the city. But I do prefer to live somewhere with grass. It just seems unnatural to make a dog pee on a sidewalk.

After the parade, we walked around town, and in the window of a psychic in Washington Square was this adorable little thing.

Some Less-Than-Perfect Photos of Some Perfect Kitties

I'm so annoyed with myself for not being able to get any pictures today, that I went back through the leftovers from last time. They're not great, but that's my fault, and I'm here to promote the cats, not my mad photography skillz. So here's Sally, Hershey, and Meow, who I have not introduced.

Meow is a Star Pet - reserved for cats and dogs who've been at the shelter the longest. He's easy-going, playful and likes pettings. He looks just like Nephthys, but bigger. He's pretty awesome if I do say so myself. But he's black, so he gets passed up. One of my dreams is to collect only black cats, tons of them, then hang out on my doorstep and cackle madly as they run all over the house behind me. People can be so stupid. Black is beautiful baby.

A Proper Introduction

My camera died the second I turned it on today. I'm so bummed, and it's totally my bad for not charging it regularly (note to self). Most everyone has cycled through though, and we're on new batches of kittens and cats. But Sally's still there, and that really makes me sad. She's sweet and playful, small and cuddly. I hope it's not her lack of an eyeball that's getting her overlooked. Hershey's still there too, and he's become less social now that there are more cats in the free-roam room. I'm not too worried, because the SPCA will keep them until they get adopted, but it's no fun for them there. They need to go home.

Since I have no good cat pics, I'll take today to introduce Dash properly, because my last post does him absolutely no justice. Now, I love all my animals, and I have no favorites, but Dash is my special boy. I wrote his story on Flickr a few months ago, so I won't repost it here. Most of that has passed. Dash still has his issues, but he's improved so, SO much, even since then, that reading it, I barely remember writing it. He's still in progress, but he's a success story, and he's changed my life. Or maybe he's complemented my life changes. He's given me new joy that someone who hasn't been through it all doesn't understand. He's more than just another dog. He's my cuddle bug, my baby boy, and I wouldn't trade him for the world.

I didn't make it to the shelter this weekend, so I wasn't going to post anything. But the goings-on at the weener meetup (why we missed the shelter) were too juicy not to share. I'm just glad Dash is a dog and won't know that I'm sharing his humiliation all over the interwebs.

Foreclosure Pets and Abandonment

Here is a great blog post about the influx of pets being given up due to the foreclosure crisis we're currently in.

I know very little about most of the cats that come to the shelter. But I know every one of them must be confused and scared and feel abandoned, and then to be poked and prodded and shoved into a cold cage in a bright room with other shrieking cats and squealy kids and slamming doors and barking dogs right outside. I see the ones who come in during my shift, and I try to visit them before I leave. They almost always are hidden back in the corner, behind their litter box and curtain, but I can't tell you how many times I've poked my head in and gotten a purr in return! I pet and coo, and if they seem receptive, I pull them out and sit with them in my lap. It is one of the most rewarding things, to sit with and see a nervous cat open up to you and soak up all the loving. I feel like that is my real purpose there, to provide a little emotional therapy to those most in need. Sure the kittens are cute and playful and fun, but everyone knows that. It's the older, shyer ones that get overlooked who need to be reassured that it's going to be okay. They've been handed over and left behind by their people, and they have no idea why. But soon, they will find a new family who will love them more than they could even imagine, and I'm going to fill in as best I can in the meantime.

We made our regular Sunday after-breakfast visit, and Sally was on top of the condo again and o-u-t, prancing around in dreamland, toes wiggling. She wasn't waking up for anything. So I gave her some sleepy-time pets, shot a pic, and visited everyone else. Roommate Nika was getting adopted, and possibly Charlie too!

Today, I spent most of my day in one of the free-roam rooms because we've got volunteers out the ears (yay!)! And I wanted to spend more time with Sally who I met last week - a timid, growly girl. I have a soft spot for the special and scared ones. I like to give them extra TLC so they know this loud, scary place isn't so bad, and that they are still loved.

I think she needs a jeweled eye patch.

She may only have one eye, but it is big and beautiful and curious enough for two.

By the time my shift ended, Sally was queen kitty on top of the kitty condo! I like to think I had a little something to do with her newfound confidence. ;)

weefaerie's wee furries

The name "wee furries" comes from my online identity weefaerie, or wee for short. So wee can refer to me, or us (we), or the size of the furries, though some are bound to be larger. My dachshunds are weeners. I'm sure there'll be more, but I think you'll catch on. I like to have fun with words (or butcher the English language, whatever).

Columbus (my name btw, it's it cute?) was in the shelter in July. I'm usually drawn to the older cats because the kittens get so much attention and stay such a short time anyway, but for some reason, the little guy grabbed me and wouldn't let go. He cried and cried and cried, so I held him and loved him all day. He was a ball of fluff with the tiniest kitten face. I wanted to stuff him in my pocket and run for the border. Finally he calmed down and passed out in his litter box (a very gross habit of kittens). I took this photo with my phone, pardon the quality.

I volunteer as a Kitty Cuddler at the SPCA of Central Florida several times a month. This is basically hanging out with the adoptable cats, petting, socializing, exercising, and helping them to get adopted. Very often, there is at least one special kitty who grabs my attention. And rather than love on them and then forget about them, I'd like to document my time with them and share them with the world.

I also have many wee furries of my own, two dogs and a cat right now. There will be more once my housing situation changes for the bigger. Eventually, I'd love to foster kittens, go to vet school, and save the world, but for now, we'll start here.
